BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Starting May 18, visitors to the Indiana University Bloomington Web site will find a new design that includes dynamic, user-friendly features and better access to information.

In addition to favorite components of the current site -- such as the A-Z Big List, news and events sections, and both topical and audience navigation -- the new site includes more photography, video as a regular feature, a new online virtual campus tour, and integration with IU's emergency communication system.

"Our talented team of designers and Web developers has created an appealing site that reflects the vibrant life and culture of our institution," said Provost Karen Hanson. "It is our hope that the redesigned, more dynamic campus home page will provide a high-quality experience for all who use it."

The site, www.iub.edu, is the campus's single most important means of communicating with both internal and external audiences, and because it can convey multiple messages simultaneously, the new design is more responsive to the university's varied constituencies: prospective students, current students, faculty and staff. For example, the old home page's single spotlight photograph -- linked to a news or feature story from an IU Bloomington publication -- willl be replaced with a slideshow containing three to five images and story links.

Schools and departments now provide a wide range of changing content on their own sites, and the new campus site is structured to highlight much more of this content than before, and thus to communicate more effectively the wealth of academic opportunities the campus offers.

The Office of the Provost led the project, in partnership with IU Public Affairs and Government Relations and its Creative Services division. The IUPUI Communications and Marketing Web team provided their expertise in Flash video and site management practices. The site was built in and will be maintained through the new Web content management system supported by University Information Technology Services.

Development was guided by an advisory committee made up of faculty, students and staff. A maintenance committee of faculty, staff and students will help the Web team keep site content fresh and varied.

This summer, the Office of the Provost will prepare templates based on the new site design that IU Bloomington units may adopt if they wish.
