FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 23, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Starting July 10, the sultry sounds of jazz will fill the air on four consecutive Friday nights throughout the month when the Indiana University Art Museum hosts its 19th annual Jazz in July summer concert series.

Each of the free, open-to-the-public concerts will be emcee'd by WFIU radio hosts Joe Bourne, host of "Just You and Me," and David Brent Johnson, host of "Night Lights." This year's Jazz in July features some of the top jazz talent in the Midwest, including Offramp, Craig and the Crawdads, Jan Aldridge Clark, Monica Herzig, Carolyn Dutton and Tom Roznowski.

Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. The Gallery of Art of the Western World on the museum's first floor will open at 5 p.m. and will remain open until 8:30 p.m. each Jazz in July Friday. This gallery features a small installation of works, "Modernist Soundscapes," being displayed in conjunction with the concert series, as well as during the museum's regular hours.

The "Modernist Soundscapes" installation highlights music forms such as ragtime, jazz and atonalism in classical music -- as well as the inventions of the phonograph and radio -- that greatly changed the "soundscape" of the early 20th century. Modern artists, such as Vassily Kandinsky, Charles Burchfield and Claude Flight, began experimenting with visual abstraction as a means of representing the concept of sound. While their approaches differed, each saw sound and music as a source of artistic inspiration.

Refreshments will be available for purchase, and visitors are invited to make a donation to the IU Art Musuem.

Jazz in July Schedule

All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place on the IU Art Museum's Sculpture Terrace. In the event of rain, concerts will be moved inside the IU Art Museum.

July 10: Offramp

With its original compositions and arrangements of well-loved standards, this acoustic modern jazz quartet featuring sax, vibraphone, bass and drums will create music that is at once new and familiar in their Jazz in July debut.

July 17: Craig and the Crawdads

Pianist Craig Brenner and the Crawdads will provide the audience with foot-stomping New Orleans-influenced zydeco, blues, jazz and swing.

July 24: Jan Aldridge Clark

Harpist Jan Aldridge Clark is blazing her way into the world of contemporary, smooth jazz, weaving her remarkable style of rhythm and harmonies with an eclectic synthesis of bass, percussion, electric guitar, violin, saxophone and cello.

July 31: Monika Herzig featuring Carolyn Dutton and Tom Roznowski

This cast of friends and Bloomington favorites will perform a program of American Songbook classics peppered with many tunes from Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter.
