Indiana University announces 2009-10 Kelley Scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Nine Kelley Scholars have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

The Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive full tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities such as overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $15,000 for recipients who are Indiana residents and about $30,000 for non-residents.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

This year's class of Kelley Scholars was selected from a group of more than 500 students admitted to IU, who were invited to apply for the program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

The nine Kelley Scholars are:

• Jeffrey Carlson, son of Bob and Diane Carlson of Aurora, Ill. -- A graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School, he was Academic All Conference in varsity golf, a National Finalist for the business club Delta Epsilon Chi, an "Excellence in Education Honoree" by the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation and a District 204 Indian Prairie Scholar.
• Adam Kalinowski, son of Dan and Karen Kalinowski of Highland, Ind. -- Adam graduated from Bishop Noll Institute, where he was president of the National Honor Society, captain of the varsity tennis team, a member of the varsity baseball team and secretary of the Service Club.
• Navya Kumar, daughter of Paritosh Kumar and Aparajita Kumar of Carmel, Ind. -- A graduate of Carmel High School, Navya was a Conner Prairie Youth Interpreter, a student officer for the Indiana High School Press Association, sports editor for the Pinnacle yearbook, a member of the Teen Library Council, public relations intern for the City of Carmel, a member of the speech team and an AP Scholar.
• Anna Orlow, daughter of Steven and Laurie Orlow, of Fort Wayne, Ind. -- She graduated from Homestead High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, concertmaster of Homestead High School Orchestra, concertmaster of Fort Wayne Suzuki Guild Orchestra, a member of the All-State Orchestra, and on the Distinguished Honor Roll.
• Molly Pearson, daughter of Douglas and Sue Pearson, of Carmel, Ind. -- A graduate of Carmel High School, she was a Commended Student among National Merit Scholarship Finalists, a referee and instructor for the Carmel Dad's Club girls volleyball league and manager of the Carmel High School boys volleyball team.
• Aidan Quealy, daughter of Brian and Georgeann (Palmer) Quealy of Beverly Shores, Ind. -- She graduated from Chesterton High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, was a Distinguished Honors Student, received the Chesterton High School Academic Ring and was a member of the guard and dance teams.
• Kristina Weber, daughter of Jeffrey Weber and Irene Vlachos-Weber, of Bloomington, Ind. -- She graduated from Bloomington High School North, where she was an AP Scholar, a Presidential Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Student Council, a participant in Habitat for Humanity, and participated in the school's band, drum line and choir.
• Eric Wertenberger, son of Jeffrey and Denise Wertenberger of Huntington, Ind. -- A graduate of Canterbury High School, Eric was a National Merit Commended Scholar, a Hoosier Scholar, captain of the varsity basketball team, and a member of the varsity tennis and varsity baseball teams.
• Ashley Yu, daughter of Yuan-Fu Yu and Lucy Yen of Columbus, Ind. -- She graduated from Columbus North High School, where she served as vice president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Key Club, was a member of the track and field team and the swimming team, a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a member of the business club Delta Epsilon Chi and studied piano.
