African American Dance Company to present its seventh annual dance workshop

The Indiana University African American Dance Company will present its seventh annual dance workshop on Jan. 30-31 at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center at IU Bloomington. The event is open to the public.

Dance professionals will provide students and other participants with experiences in a broad range of dance styles and movement expression from the African American and African Diaspora traditions. Master classes in diverse dance forms, a discussion panel, and a dance showcase creating a forum for students and community dancers will be part of an enriching weekend of dance.

The Dance Workshop will run from 1 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 30 and from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 31at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, 275 N. Jordan Ave. The event is sponsored by the IU Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and the African American Arts Institute.

"Come and experience dance in the African American and African Diaspora traditions," said Iris Rosa, director of the African American Dance Company and associate professor of African American and African Diaspora studies.

Workshops on the Modern-Horton technique and African, Jazz, Dunham, Afro-Cuban and Salsa styles will be offered. Classes will be accompanied by live music. Guest artists include:

-- Elena Anderson, a performer and teacher with Deeply Rooted Productions in Chicago and an expert on Horton modern dance technique.

-- Joan Burroughs, a professor at Florida A&M University, dance anthropologist and choreographer.

-- Reynaldo Gonzalez, dancer, musician and singer in the Afro-Cuban dance and music tradition.

-- Willie Hinton, international dancer and choreographer who has performed with Philadanco, Dance Kaleidoscope and Jubilations Dance Co.

-- Chantal Gondang, a professional dancer and instructor from Cameroon who specializes in African dance.

Full registration includes two Friday classes and three Saturday classes for $60 (adults) or $40 (children aged 17 and under). Single-day registration includes all activities for the selected day. Friday prices are $35/$20 (adult/child) and Saturday $40/$25 (adult/child). The public can also benefit from a single class, if preferred, for a fee of $15/$9 (adult/child). Registration will be available at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.
