BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie issued the following statement this evening (Dec. 22) following the Indiana Commission for Higher Education announcement regarding budget cut allocations for the state's higher education institutions.

"While we greatly regret the necessity of budget cuts of this magnitude, it remains essential that we implement them in ways that preserve and protect the quality of our research and teaching missions at Indiana University.

"However, no one should underestimate the very serious challenge that this deep cut represents, nor the impact it will have on the IU's broader contributions to the state.

"We appreciate that the Commission for Higher Education has allocated these budget cuts thoughtfully among the state's public institutions. In the coming weeks hard and difficult decisions will have to be made, and we will be announcing further cost saving measures and budget adjustments that will allow us to fulfill our core missions while implementing these painful cuts.

"Indiana University has been vigorously cutting expenses, and many of the suggestions for expense reductions made today in the ICHE statement have already been implemented by Indiana University as was detailed last week in a news release (https://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/12940.html). The university will study the commission's other suggestions."
