BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IU Vice President for Information Technology and CIO Brad Wheeler has appointed Jon-Paul Herron director of IU Global Research Network Operations Center (GRNOC) Engineering, where he will oversee IU's prestigious national services in research and education networking operations and planning. Herron has been at Indiana University for nearly 10 years.

IU Associate Vice President for Networks David Jent said, "Jon-Paul has become an invaluable asset to the GRNOC. With his extensive communication skills and forward-thinking ideas, he continues to grow his national reputation as a leader in network architecture, design, and advanced services deployment."

After graduating from IU in 1997 with a BA in English and Philosophy, Herron worked for several years at IBM in Chicago. Returning to IU as a network engineer in 2000, he has since become a prominent figure on the national networking stage, working with National LambdaRail (NLR) and Internet2, chairing two key NLR engineering committees, and leading network technology workshops.

Today, Herron also serves as principle investigator for the GENI Meta-Operations Center project, which is engaged in defining and providing the operational systems for the Global Environment for Network Innovations Project.

Jent added, "At a recent national meeting of network administrators, I was asked how IU attracts people like Jon-Paul to Indiana. I responded that good people are attracted to interesting and important work, and that the GRNOC and IU are doing both."

The GRNOC at Indiana University is a premier provider of highly responsive network coordination, engineering, and installation services that support the advancement of research and education networking. Network Engineering promotes innovation in research and education networking at the campus, regional, and national levels through comprehensive expertise in network operations, architecture, and planning services.
