Media advisory: Indiana University expert available to comment on poverty data

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kristin Seefeldt, assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, is available to talk to news media following the release Thursday (Sept. 16) of U.S. Census Bureau data on poverty and family income for 2009.

Prior to coming to SPEA, Seefeldt served from 2004-2010 as the assistant director of the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan where she conducted research on the causes and consequences of poverty.

Her current research focuses on poverty and low-income families in the United States, housing instability, and the implementation of programs serving low-income families.

The Census Bureau will release its annual report: Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2009, in an online news conference Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT. This report contains the official national findings from the Current Population Survey (CPS). Some demographers are predicting a sharp increase in the poverty rate, to the highest level since 1993.
