IU Jacobs School of Music welcomes 2010-11 Jacobs Scholars and Jacobs Fellows

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Eight new Jacobs Scholars and four new Jacobs Fellows began their studies this fall at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Selected from a large pool of incoming students, they are the recipients of the most prestigious and substantial scholarship awards in the school.

The new class of 12 Jacobs Scholars and Fellows, selected for their excellence and leadership in the world of music, was chosen from a group of 3,094 applicants who auditioned for fall 2010 admission to the school. Of these, 1,051 were admitted to the Jacobs School, with an incoming class totaling 515 students.

The program began in 2006 and now boasts 58 Jacobs Scholars and Fellows. These scholarships are made possible by the Barbara and David H. Jacobs endowment for undergraduate and graduate scholarships and fellowships and Indiana University's Matching the Promise campaign.

Michael Day -- From Belvidere, Ill., Day is pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education in voice and is a student of Sharmal Schrock. A graduate of Boylan Catholic High School, Day has been a soloist with the IMEA Honors All-State Choir, a solo finalist with the Millikin Vocal Festival and was president of the Boylan High School chapter of the National Honor Society. His awards include the Boylan High School Fine Arts Scholarship Award and a top rating in the IHSA Music Competition.

Felice Doynov -- From Kansas City, Mo., Doynov is pursuing the Bachelor of Music Education in flute and is a student of Thomas Robertello. A graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, she played principal flute in the Missouri All-State Band and Orchestra from 2007 to 2010, participated in the 2010 Imani Winds Chamber Music Institute at Juilliard, played second flute in the 2008-09 National Collegiate Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall and performed at the 2008 National Flute Convention in the Pedagogy Concert. Doynov received the highest rank in the Missouri All-State Solo and Ensemble Competition from 2006 to 2010 and was first flute in the All-District Band and Orchestra from 2006 to 2010.

Nicholas Mariscal -- From Tucson, Ariz., Mariscal is pursuing the Bachelor of Music in cello and is a student of Eric Kim. A graduate of University High School, Mariscal is a four-time medal winner in the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, having won a gold medal in 2007 and 2010. In addition, he won first place in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition and the Outstanding Principal Player and Most Valuable Player Awards in the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra. Mariscal is also a 2009 recipient of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Morton Gould Young Composers Award and a top winner in the Arizona Association of Math Teachers State Math Contest.

Kornilios Michailidis -- From Athens, Greece, Michailidis is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in piano and is a student of Evelyne Brancart. A graduate of the Skalkotas Conservatory of Athens, Michailidis is a gold medal recipient in the Skalkotas Conservatory Competition and a recipient of Third Prize, Public's Prize and Most Promising Artist Prize in the International Piano Competition in Mayenne. He has performed in the Saint Lizier Festival and with the National State Orchestra of Athens, among others. He studied for two years at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris after receiving an Onassis scholarship.

Bailey Petersma -- From Johnston, Iowa, Petersma is pursuing the Bachelor of Music Education with a concentration in percussion and is a student of Kevin Bobo. A graduate of Johnston High School, she has been a member of the Iowa All-State Band and Choir and participated in her high school Concert Band, Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Choir and Show Choir, and has participated in the IU Jacobs School of Music Percussion Academy. Petersma is a member of the National Honor Society.

Laurel Roseborrough -- From Southlake, Texas, Roseborrough is pursuing the Bachelor of Music in horn and is a student of Jeff Nelsen. A graduate of Keller High School, Roseborrough is a winner of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. She has participated in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Orchestra and served as first chair in the TMEA All-Region Orchestra and as drum major of Keller's marching band. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.

Cornelia Sommer -- From Bellevue, Wash., Sommer is pursuing the Bachelor of Music in bassoon and is a student of William Ludwig. She has been principal bassoon in the Washington All-State Symphony Orchestra and assistant principal bassoon in the All-Northwest Band. Also an accomplished pianist, Sommer is a winner of the Gold Seal in piano in the Seattle Young Artists Festival and a recipient of the Loran Olsen Award for exceptional musicality in the Simon-Fiset Piano Competition. A member of the National Honor Society, Sommer is also a National AP Scholar and a National Merit Scholar.

Joseph Weber -- From Omaha, Neb., Weber is pursuing the Bachelor of Music in clarinet and is a student of Howard Klug. A graduate of Millard South High School, Weber was the 2009 winner of the Omaha Orchestra Concerto Competition and the 2009 Nebraska Young Artist Award. Weber has been a member of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra and the Woodwind Quintet, and was principal clarinet in the Nebraska All-State Orchestra.

Jonathan Gertner -- From Kfar Saba, Israel, Gertner is pursuing the Performer Diploma in viola and is a student of Atar Arad. A graduate of Jerusalem Academy, Gertner is a 2009 prize winner in the Jerusalem Academy String Department Competition and a 2007 prize winner in the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Music Competition. He has performed with the Israel Camerata Orchestra and as soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and frequently collaborates with the Kaprizma and the Meitar ensembles.

Benjamin Hart -- From St. Peters, Mo., Hart is pursuing the Master of Music in violin and is a student of Alex Kerr. A graduate of Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, Hart has been a member of the Ars Nova String Quartet, a premier student quartet of the Blair School of Music, and recently participated in a collaborative composition project at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In addition, he and British violinist Peter Sheppard Skaerved gave the U.S. premiere of Michael Alec Rose's violin duet, "Everything Under the Sun."

Hye Jung Lee -- From Seoul, South Korea, Lee is pursuing the Artist Diploma in voice and is a student of Constanza Cuccaro. Lee was a prize winner in the 5th Shizuoka International Opera Competition and the 58th ARD International Music Competition, a finalist in the International Gesangswettbewerb Feruccio Tagliavini Competition and a winner of the Career Bridges Competition.

Qian Wu -- Originally from Shanghai and having lived in Great Britain since the age of 9, Wu is pursuing the Artist Diploma in piano and is a student of Arnaldo Cohen. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Wu is a winner of the Tunbridge Wells International Young Artists Competition. She debuted at Wigmore Hall and performed at the International Music Festival in Koblenz. In April 2009, Wu released her first recording on the Dal Segno label.
