INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's first economic development mission to India will include the director of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Dr. Anantha Shekhar, who will travel to India Sunday (Feb. 20) to participate in a week-long trade mission led by Indiana Secretary of Commerce Mitch Roob. The mission will focus on establishing partnerships with information technology, life sciences and new energy companies in India.

"This is an exciting opportunity for Indiana to strengthen its biomedical, informatics and life sciences research resources in the global economy," said Shekhar, Raymond E. Houk Professor of Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine. "India presents great opportunities for economic growth for Indiana's companies and universities. I am delighted to be asked to join Secretary Roob on this trip and plan to highlight the strengths of IU, the IU School of Medicine and the Indiana CTSI's academic and private partner institutions to our counterparts in India."

In addition to more than 30 business meetings during the seven-day trip, the 13-member delegation of business and academic leaders also will attend receptions hosted by the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

"Along with China, India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is poised to invest significantly in the U.S. market," said Roob, also chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "Our inaugural trip will be focused on introducing firms to all Indiana has to offer, in particular, a workforce skilled in IT, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing and a location that offers tremendous access to all of the major U.S. commerce hubs."

Participants from Indiana CTSI partner institutions will include Victor Lechtenberg, interim provost at Purdue University, and Robert J. Bernhard, vice president for research at the University of Notre Dame.
