Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour comes to Bloomington April 2, 3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Outdoor Adventures will host the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour April 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. at Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

A program of The Banff Centre in Alberta, the annual fall Banff Mountain Film Festival is the largest mountain film festival in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Following the film fest in Banff, Alberta, the tour travels to about 350 communities and 32 countries around the world, presenting some of the most inspiring action, environmental and adventure films from the festival.

From approximately 260 films entered into the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival, IU Outdoor Adventures has selected 25 award-winning films that feature a range of styles and themes, including climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment.

IU student Ginelle Heller, assistant program coordinator for IU Outdoor Adventures, said the films in this year's Banff Mountain Film Festival will transport audiences around the globe by providing a glimpse into the lives of daring athletes and adventures from both near and far.

"Some of the films are light and humorous, such as the story of a climber's desperate attempt to summit his town's highest parking garage. Others are serious stories of adventure, like two brothers' efforts to cross a treacherous sea in kayaks," she said. "Still others are tragic, such as the teary story of lives cut short in an avalanche and the difficulties of recovering from such a trauma. Despite these differences, all of the films chronicle the experiences of those athletes bent on pushing the envelope of outdoor adventure, and all offer audiences a beautiful and inspiring window into the extremes of human-powered experience."

AZADI: Freedom is a cultural documentary seen through the eyes of skiers set in the disputed region of Kashmir during the violent militant insurgency of the 1990s. Crossing The Ditch tells the dramatic story of two young Australian kayakers who battle 10-meter towering waves, massive storms, shark-filled seas and strong currents to conquer the Tasman Sea, some of the world's deadliest and most treacherous waters.

The screenings are presented by National Geographic, The North Face and Parks Canada and are sponsored by Deuter, Outdoor Research, Three Cups of Tea/Stones into Schools, Primaloft, Tom's of Maine and ProBar, with support from Mountain Safety Research, Fernie Alpine Resort, Petzl, World Expeditions and Mountain Hard Wear.
