BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- At Indiana University's 2011 IU Student Involvement Fair, new and returning IU students can learn more about student organizations, local non-profit agencies and IU offices and programs. This year's fair is scheduled for Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Indiana Memorial Union hotel parking lot near Woodburn and Ballantine halls.

More than 250 student organizations, local non-profit agencies and IU offices will host tables at the event. Students will have the opportunity to meet current student leaders, IU administrators and Bloomington community members to find the right involvement opportunity that meets their interests.

Some of the student organizations represented at this year's event are the Student Pre-Med Association, Afghan Student Association, Stand-Up Comedy Club and the National Association of Black Accountants.

Student representatives from the fraternity and sorority councils will be on hand to answer questions about Greek Life at IU. Local non-profit agencies such as the American Red Cross, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Volunteers in Medicine and Middle Way House will share information about volunteer opportunities and civic engagement with the Bloomington community.

WIUX, IU's student radio station, will broadcast live from the event and will showcase student organizations in a new performance area.

This year's event has an eco-friendly focus. Instead of passing out plastic water bottles, event organizers are encouraging attendees to bring refillable containers so they can rehydrate at water stations located throughout the fair. The student planning committee is coordinating a cell phone recycling effort with proceeds benefitting the planting of trees at the Bloomington Community Orchard. A student-led "Green Team" will collect, sort and recycle materials throughout the fair to divert waste from landfills, and attendees are encouraged to collect contact information at their tables instead of handing out paper flyers. New publicity materials to aid the efforts to find missing IU student Lauren Spierer will also be made available to students at the event.

The 2011IU Student Involvement Fair is sponsored by a campuswide committee that includes representatives from Student Life and Learning, the Indiana Memorial Union, Union Board, the Commission on Multicultural Understanding, the Office of First Year Experience Programs and Residential Programs and Services.

Student involvement in the planning of this event is led by a Shaffer Leadership Intern from Student Life and Learning and includes representation from the Indiana University Student Association, Student Sustainability Council, Union Board, WIUX and other organizations.
