BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The San Francisco Jazz Collective, an ensemble composed of eight musicians from five countries, will perform at IU Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m.

The West Coast's largest nonprofit jazz institution formed SFJAZZ Collective in 2004. Since its debut, the ensemble has been internationally recognized for its innovation in jazz repertoire. SFJAZZ presents a new limited-edition CD every year, including SFJAZZ Collective CD: Live in New York 2011 Season 8, which explores the music of Stevie Wonder, and SFJAZZ Collective CD: Live 2010 Seventh Annual Concert Tour, featuring music from Horace Silver. The group includes two-time Down Beat Trombonist of the Year Robin Eubanks and three-time Grammy Award-nominated vibraphonist Stefon Harris, as well as trumpeter Avishai Cohen, drummer Kendrick Scott, saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Penman, and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Miguel Zenón.

To cultivate its distinctive sound, the SFJAZZ Collective convenes in San Francisco each spring for a multiweek residency. Throughout this extended rehearsal period -- a rarity in today's jazz world -- the octet workshops the season's new repertoire and interacts with the Bay Area community through SFJAZZ's education programs for youth and adults. The collective then takes to the performance stage, including home season concerts under the auspices of the SFJAZZ Spring Season and a national and international tour, with stops in some of the world's most prominent concert halls.

For the Oct. 22 performance in Bloomington, the last show of a three-week tour, the group will play well-known Stevie Wonder numbers "Superstition," "My Cherie Amour" and "Sir Duke" as well as lesser-known tunes such as "Race Babbling" and "Creepin."

"This incredible band of brilliant jazz players brings alive your favorite hits of legendary musicians showcasing them once again for enthusiastic audiences," said IU Auditorium director Doug Booher. "The energy and excitement they bring to the music of Stevie Wonder will transform IU Auditorium into the best jazz club in the country."

Before the performance will be a special pre-show talk by Pat Harbison, professor of Jazz Studies, at 6:30 p.m. in room A201 of the Theatre and Drama Building. The talk is free and open to the public.
