BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two senior Army ROTC cadets at Indiana University are ranked among the top 20 cadets in the nation.

Each year, senior cadets are ranked against their peers nationally based on their performance during a military leadership evaluation course, academic showing and prior performance history with the ROTC program.

Senior cadets John Brogan and Alex Clem rank in the top 1 percent of their peers, according to Lt. Col. Michael Ogden, director of IU's military science program. Both are enrolled in pre-medicine programs at IU.

IU is one of only three schools with multiple cadets in the top 20, out of more than 5,600 cadets nationwide, Ogden said. The program's senior cadets also rank first in the state and first in the 7th Brigade, which includes 38 schools in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee.

"To maintain that level of academic performance with the rigors of learning the art of military leadership -- and to gain those leadership skills and mental toughness and be able to compete on a national scale -- is impressive," Ogden said. "Last year, we had similar marks. This is the continuation of a longstanding tradition, where Hoosier cadets have represented the university and competed exceptionally well nationally."

IU's Army Reserve Officer Training program is the fifth-oldest program in the nation. Military instruction was first taught at the university in 1840.
