BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the first time since the 1980s, the Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) will host its annual conference at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Oct. 21-22.

A highlight of the conference is a free public performance by former Jacobs School faculty member James Tocco, who is now Eminent Scholar/Artist-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

The recital in Auer Hall, Friday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. features works by Bach, Liszt and Chopin. The concert is jointly sponsored by IMTA and the Jacobs School.

"The annual IMTA Conference provides our members with a smorgasbord of ideas to guide our students in developing their creative music-making skills," IMTA President Claudia Bossard said.

The conference provides an opportunity for music teachers to exchange ideas, share experiences with students and develop pedagogical strategies incorporating the latest in research and technology. A commissioned piano sonatina by Jacobs School assistant professor Aaron Travers will be given its premiere by pianist Vincent Adragna.

The group of attendees and presenters is made up of independent music teachers, collegiate faculty members and college students in training to teach music.

In addition to lectures and presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to attend lecture-recitals, observe a master class and see the performances of award-winning young musicians.

For more than 120 years, the Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) has fostered the instruction, study and performance of music. More than 300 individuals throughout the state of Indiana join 24,000 colleagues nationwide to form a community of music professionals.
