Indiana University to celebrate commencements at eight campuses

Total of 15,887 IU degrees to be conferred at ceremonies

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A total of 15,887 graduates will be eligible for degrees from Indiana University during May commencement ceremonies on all eight of IU's campuses. The IU commencement week will begin in Bloomington on May 7 and conclude in Richmond at IU East on May 13.

Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert will serve as commencement speaker, in addition to presiding over ceremonies. Herbert will address graduates, friends and family members at two ceremonies on the Bloomington campus on May 7. IU will award 6,954 degrees during the morning and afternoon ceremonies at Assembly Hall. The morning ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony at 3 p.m.

There are 1,839 Purdue University degrees that also will be conferred during the ceremonies on IU campuses. Other IU commencement ceremonies and the number of graduates eligible for degrees, including Purdue University degrees awarded on campuses that have Purdue programs, are as follows:

• IUPUI, May 8 at 3 p.m. at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Degrees will be awarded to 5,320 students, including 4,300 from IU and 900 from Purdue. This number also includes graduates from the IU Columbus facility, where there are 59 IU graduates and 61 Purdue graduates.
• IU Southeast, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the IUS Amphitheater in New Albany. Degrees will be awarded to 977 students, including 944 from IU and 33 from Purdue.
• IU Kokomo, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the east side of the Kelly Student Center in Kokomo. Degrees will be awarded to 529 students, including 481 from IU and 48 from Purdue.
• IU South Bend, May 10 at 6 p.m. in the Joyce Center at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. Degrees will be awarded to 1,074 students, including 1,049 from IU and 25 from Purdue.
• IPFW, May 11 at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum. Degrees will be awarded to 1,743 students, including 986 from IU and 757 from Purdue.
• IU Northwest, May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Genesis Center in Gary. Degrees will be awarded to 856 IU students.
• IU East, May 13 at 6 p.m. in the Tiernan Center at Richmond High School. Degrees will be awarded to 273 students, including 258 from IU and 15 from Purdue.

For Bloomington, the number of graduates includes degree candidates for May, June and August, and graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded from January 2005 to July 2005. For other campuses, the figures include degree recipients from December 2004 and candidates for May, June and August 2005. The numbers also include graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded during the 2004-05 academic year.

Four individuals will receive honorary degrees at three IU campuses. They are:

• IU Bloomington: Andrew Barnes, journalist, and former editor and president of the St. Petersburg Times, Doctor of Humane Letters.
• IUPUI: Leonard Betley, attorney and community leader in the areas of medicine, arts, education and the environment, Doctor of Laws; and Russell Mawby, president, CEO, philanthropist and international leader with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Doctor of Humane Letters.
• IU Kokomo: Milton Cole, business leader and CEO of Cole Hardwood Inc., Doctor of Laws.
