BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In what could be the first collaborative undertaking of its kind at an American university, the "Double Exposure" project will premiere original works created by Indiana University film and musical composition students at IU Cinema on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The project harnesses the creative talents of composition students from the IU Student Composer Association, IU filmmaking students and instrumentalists in the IU Jacobs School of Music.

Throughout the project, students have been guided and supported by faculty members Susanne Schwibs, Department of Communication and Culture; John Gibson, Jacobs School of Music; and Jon Vickers, IU Cinema.

"The 'Double Exposure' project matches students from two of our 16 mm filmmaking classes with music composition students," Schwibs said. "They meet at various stages of the production -- reviewing footage together, discussing stylistic preferences, rehearsing timings -- and share their understanding of filmic and musical language.

"It was a real pleasure to see this project come together. The students are enthusiastic and imaginative. The audience will encounter a wonderful range of projects and music: suspenseful, experimental, whimsical, thought-provoking and entertaining. And it's a real treat to experience these works at the IU Cinema, with its first-class projection facilities and a live student orchestra. I don't know of any other school in the country that has produced such an event."

While there have been similar music-and-screen collaborations involving students from other departments, Schwibs said, "I believe the uniqueness here lies in the event itself: the live performance of music to the screen of projects that were conceived together for this purpose -- student-composed, student-filmed, student-played and student-conducted works."

Typically, a composer writes a score after a film is edited. For "Double Exposure," filmmaker and composer worked together from the beginning, adjusting both picture and music to fit their shared vision as the film came together.

"The goal of the Student Composer Association has always been to develop interdisciplinary projects," association president David Roberts said. "Working with artists in other fields is invaluable to young composers. We believe that this is the beginning of what will be an exciting, new fixture in the Bloomington arts community."

Conductors Elliott Bark and Roger Kalia will lead two ensembles during the screening. Manny Knowles, assistant director for IU Cinema systems/operations, will oversee the projection of 16 mm film and HDCAM digital formats for the demanding, fast-paced program. Faculty and students from the Jacobs School's Department of Recording Arts will record the live performances and provide sound reinforcement connected to the IU Cinema's world-class sound system.

"I am thrilled about this latest project being developed largely by our own students, and I am grateful for guidance, assistance and support provided by our colleagues across campus and Dean Gwyn Richards," said David Dzubay, chair of the Jacobs School of Music composition department. "Our student composers are interested in exploring many avenues of musical expression, including venues apart from the traditional concert hall. I am proud of the dedication and entrepreneurial spirit shown by the students in producing what I hope will become a successful annual event, along with their 'Hammer & Nail' contemporary dance and music collaboration, which takes place later in the spring semester."
