BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University and the University of Oxford are accepting applications for entrance into a unique joint degree program focusing on information law and policy.

The one-year program will award successful candidates with an LL.M. from IU's Maurer School of Law and a Certificate in Information Law and Policy from the Oxford Internet Institute. Those combined recognitions will identify the graduate as having completed the world's only specialized graduate law degree in information law and policy.

"This is an incredible opportunity for students interested in the emerging field of information governance," said Maurer School of Law Distinguished Professor and C. Ben Dutton Professor of Law Fred H. Cate. "The surge in online and mobile transactions, the proliferation of metadata, and other developments are creating a tremendous amount of data, and attorneys and policy experts are increasingly in demand to help address such challenges. Having one of the world's only specialized degrees in this area will put future leaders in a better position to help solve them."

Students accepted into the program will spend the fall semester on the Bloomington campus, taking 12 to 16 credit hours of regular law classes among other LL.M. and J.D. students in subjects such as intellectual property law, information privacy law, information security law and administrative law. The first class of students admitted into the program will begin this fall.

Beginning in mid-January, students will relocate to Oxford, England, where they will take two graduate elective courses offered by the Oxford Internet Institute. Recent course offerings have included Internet and society, Internet economics, online social networks and digital-era government and politics. Those courses will conclude in mid-March.

During May and June, students will complete a 10,000-word master's thesis under the supervision of IU and Oxford faculty. The thesis will be completed by Aug. 1.

Admission to this unique program is highly competitive. Applicants must have a J.D. or its equivalent from a recognized institution and a distinguished record of academic performance. Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis, but interested students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
