BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Student Media Board appointed two new editors-in-chief for the Indiana Daily Student newspaper and the editor for the 2013 Arbutus yearbook on March 30.

Jake New, a senior from Loogootee, Ind., has been named the editor-in-chief of the summer 2012 Indiana Daily Student. New has worked for the IDS for eight semesters and has held a variety of positions, including managing editor and region editor.

Charlie Scudder, a sophomore from Carbondale, Ill., will follow New as fall 2012 editor-in-chief. Scudder is the multimedia editor for the daily newspaper. He has previously worked as a political beat reporter, a weekend columnist and an Inside magazine features assistant during his past four semesters.

"I hope to be able to create something students are excited to pick up," he said. "I want to produce a product that truly means something to them."

Scudder said he hopes to use his multimedia and Web experience to spark student interest in the news.

"I would like to put content up on the Web faster and in different forms, constantly updating in order to keep students coming back to the IDS for news more often," he said.

Rachel Wisinski, a sophomore from Spring Grove, Ill., has been appointed editor of the 2013 Arbutus yearbook. Wisinski previously worked as an Arbutus reporter and staff writer.

"The Arbutus embodies a Hoosier's four years in Bloomington so they can look back on the memories for the rest of their lives, and it is our responsibility to fulfill that task," Wisinski said.

Student editors are in charge of publications' content, with editorial independence granted by the IU Board of Trustees.

Published by students for students, the Indiana Daily Student, Inside magazine and Arbutus yearbook are among the nation's most honored collegiate publications, consistently winning top national honors. The publications and their sites comprise IU Student Media, a self-supporting IU auxiliary in historic Ernie Pyle Hall with the IU School of Journalism. The Daily Student, first published in 1867 and becoming daily in 1899, now publishes 15,000 copies per day with an online readership of 230,000 users per month.
