BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University students and community members are invited to attend a hands-on workshop Friday afternoon at IU Bloomington's Hilltop Garden Center to learn about local food and sustainable gardening skills.

The event will include six demonstration stations, each led by a knowledgeable and skilled gardener. Each station will last about 10 to 15 minutes, and participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion with the station teachers and fellow participants. The stations are:

Event leaders hope to provide participants with the necessary combination of information and hands-on skill to integrate sustainability concepts into their existing lifestyles. Station topics were chosen to address the unique space and rental constraints under which students often live. To aid in the implementation of skills learned, participants will also be provided with informational fliers and heirloom seeds.

The Garden Extravaganza will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 6. Students are welcome to come for any portion of the event. Participants are asked to register online, but registration is not necessary.

The Garden Extravaganza is a project of the IU Office of Sustainability and the City of Bloomington Department of Economic and Sustainable Development through their Living Sustainably Off-Campus initiative. Hilltop Garden Center and the IU Campus Garden Initiative provided additional support.
