BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the third time, Indiana University has received national recognition for excellence in fund raising from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The CASE Wealth ID Awards for Educational Fund Raising are given annually to superior fund-raising programs in education. IU won the award in 1999 and 2000, and again this year for fiscal 2004 results.

Winners demonstrated a solid pattern of growth in private support, breadth in fundraising programs and number of donors and other evidence of a mature, comprehensive and successful program.

"This isn't an award that you apply for," said Curt Simic, president of the IU Foundation, the university's central development office. "It is driven by the data, and the institution is judged against its own past performance. You have to maintain an excellent base while showing significant growth over a period of years."

IU's gift totals have increased from $43.9 million 10 years ago to $121.4 million in fiscal 2004. Total private-sector support for IU, which also includes non-governmental research grants awarded to faculty, grew from $106 million to $248.5 million over the same period.

Simic credited IU's success to the support of generous donors, highly successful, multi-year fund-raising campaigns for the Bloomington and IUPUI campuses. He also praised the work of deans and development officers at all eight IU campuses and the IU Foundation.

Other winners in the category of public research/doctoral institutions are Auburn University, Ohio State University, the University of California at San Francisco, the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
