IU Kelley School professor elected vice president of the Academy of International Business

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Patricia P. McDougall-Covin, director of the Institute for International Business at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, has been elected to a two-year term as vice president of the leading association of scholars and specialists in the field of international business.

McDougall-Covin also will serve on the executive board of the Academy of International Business. In her first year, she will be in charge of the academy's program for its international conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in summer 2013. During the second year of her appointment, she will perform duties on behalf of the academy's president in his or her absence.

The Academy of International Business has more than 3,400 members in 77 countries. Its membership includes scholars from the leading global academic institutions as well as consultants, researchers, and government and NGO representation.

"I was delighted to hear of Professor McDougall's new leadership role as vice president of AIB. She is truly one of the finest all-around international business scholars in the world," said Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School.

"Her research on global entrepreneurship is path-breaking. Beyond her scholarship, she has an extraordinary record in creating and managing global education programs and has a proven track record of success in leading the Institute for International Business at the Kelley School," Smith added. "She will do a superb job as vice president of AIB."

Last year, McDougall-Covin was appointed as director of the Institute for International Business in Kelley. It supports the internationalization of Kelley's academic programs -- expanding Kelley's global presence in undergraduate, graduate and executive education, and strengthening its internationally focused activities.

She also is the William L. Haeberle Professor of Entrepreneurship. She served as associate dean of the Kelley School from 2004 to 2009 and as chair of its management department from 2000 to 2003. She is a 21st Century Entrepreneurship Research Fellow and past Entrepreneurship Division Chair in the Academy of Management.

She and her frequent co-author, Benjamin Oviatt, are widely credited with pioneering the growing field of international entrepreneurship. Her first published article on international entrepreneurship appeared in 1989 in the Journal of Business Venturing.

They received the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award for their 1994 article on the early internationalization of new ventures. The award is given to the article that has had the most significant impact on international business research during the past decade.

McDougall-Covin has co-edited four books and published numerous articles that appear in a variety of academic and professional journals. She is a current or former member of 10 editorial boards. Her business teaching cases appear in more than 25 leading textbooks. She earned her doctorate in strategic management from the University of South Carolina.
