BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Edward L. Hutton Foundation has made a gift of $500,000 to endow the Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship -- the largest gift to date to benefit from a new Indiana University matching program for international studies scholarships. The gift will be administered and invested by the IU Foundation.

Because the university will match the annual distribution provided by the IU Foundation, the gift will have twice the impact it would have otherwise by effectively doubling the annual amount of scholarship support it generates for study abroad. Hutton's children, Tom Hutton, Jennie Hutton Jacoby and Ted Hutton, made the gift to honor and strengthen the legacy of their late father, a longtime benefactor of IU and the Hutton Honors College.

The Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship will come under the mantle of the Hutton International Experiences Program, which was also inspired by Edward L. Hutton, an IU alumnus, and was first piloted in 2000. Hutton endowed the HIEP with a $9 million gift in 2003.

The Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship will provide needed funding for high-achieving students who seek international experiences but are challenged by difficult economic times.

"Given the current economy and the surge in costs for airfare, living expenses and program fees, this generous gift and the IU match couldn't come at a better time," said Matt Auer, dean of the Hutton Honors College. "We're thrilled that a second generation of Huttons shares our passion for study abroad."

The Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship joins the HIEP as a critical resource for promoting international experiences for IU undergraduates. The HIEP has benefitted more than 4,000 students since its inception. With the new funding and match from IU, the HIEP will enable 600 students annually to incorporate international experiences into their academic programs.

"This latest act of generosity by the Hutton family will be invaluable to the university's mission to prepare our students for the global community in which they will live and work upon their graduation from Indiana University," said President Michael A. McRobbie. "This gift will allow more students to study abroad and further strengthens IU's reputation as a leader among U.S. universities in providing international experiences for its students."

The gift fulfills one of the key missions of IU: to promote international and intercultural exchange and learning among members of the university community. McRobbie's "Principles of Excellence" call for "enlarged study abroad activity." The HIEP is central to that aim as IU's single largest source of funding for students who study, intern and volunteer abroad -- a program fortified by the new Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship.

"We are very excited to join the university in expanding the HIEP with the establishment of the Hutton Family Study Abroad Scholarship," said Tom Hutton, vice president and secretary of the Edward L. Hutton Foundation. "Our dad always viewed international experiences as a wonderful way to enhance a student's undergraduate education and would have been thrilled with the university's matching program. We hope others will take up the university's offer to bolster international studies scholarships."

Edward L. Hutton also funded the construction of the $3.5 million Hutton Honors College and was generous in funding other student scholarship and faculty endowments at IU through the IU Foundation. He chaired the IU Foundation's volunteer fundraising committee that raised $23 million for the Herman B Wells Scholars program in the 1980s.
