BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Cool jazz tones will fill the air at the Indiana University Art Museum during its Jazz in July series, part of the university's annual Summer Festival of the Arts celebration.

The museum will host free, family-friendly jazz concerts each Friday night in July from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on its Sculpture Terrace. Some of the area's hottest jazz talent will perform:

July 6: Andy Cobine Trio
July 13: Mahluli-McCutchen Quartet
July 20: Monika Herzig Acoustic Project
July 27: Stardusters Jazz Orchestra

Nan Brewer, the museum's Lucienne M. Glaubinger Curator of Works on Paper, will present a short talk at 5:45 p.m. July 27 on three prints by the German modernist Willi Baumeister, including a "line figure" from the mid-1930s and two large color screen prints from the 1950s that show the artist's interest in primitivism and move toward greater abstraction. She will also discuss his work in the theater and his belief in the intersection of the arts.

Throughout the summer, visitors to the IU Art Museum can also view works by British pop artist David Hockney and the late William Zimmerman, a nationally recognized wildlife artist and Brown County resident; learn how West African cultures use indigo-dyed cotton wraps to communicate a wide range of social, political and religious messages; or take a free yoga class on Saturday morning in the museum's light-filled atrium.

The jazz series and other events are highlights of IU's second annual Summer Festival of the Arts, a 113-day event that features visual arts, music, cinema, dance and theater on the Bloomington campus. The festival was conceived as a way to support the creation of new arts events and showcase the vibrant cultural offerings at IU that help make Bloomington such a popular arts destination throughout the summer.
