BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has announced that it plans to extend its summer tuition discount program for undergraduate students for the 2013 summer session. Under the plan, Indiana resident students will receive a 25 percent reduction from published tuition rates during the 2013 summer session, while out-of-state students will receive an equivalent dollar reduction in tuition rates.

The summer tuition reduction program, announced in October 2011, resulted in more students taking courses at its campuses across the state this summer than a year ago, and a combined savings to those students of $11.8 million.

The 29,423 students enrolled at seven IU campuses this summer represented a 3 percent increase over the previous summer, with the university's core campuses in Indianapolis and Bloomington experiencing gains of 4.9 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. IUPUI has the largest summer enrollment of any IU campus, at more than 10,000 students; about 9,200 students took classes at IU Bloomington. IU East in Richmond, up 14.7 percent, and IU Kokomo, 11.3 percent, experienced the largest percentage increases in summer enrollment.

"In launching this pilot program, we hoped to provide immediate financial relief to IU students and their families, while also encouraging more students to take advantage of our summer sessions to stay on track to graduate in four years, or even less," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "We also recognize that many factors contribute to summer school attendance, most notably the longstanding tradition of college students taking off during the summer months.

"In that context, we think the results of this program are a positive first step, upon which we will look to build this year."

The university plans to, as appropriate, make adjustments to course offerings in an attempt to attract even more students to its campuses next summer. It also will continue to aggressively market the program to students and their parents, and look for ways to make it easier for students to transfer credits earned during the summer from one IU campus to another.

Specific information and portals to individual campus sites will continue to be available at the summer tuition discount program's website.
