BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma will share its multicultural orchestral experience with IU Bloomington students through residency and other educational activities, and will also give a public performance at 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at IU Auditorium.

Formed under the artistic direction of Ma in 2000, the Silk Road Ensemble draws together distinguished performers and composers from more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Members explore one another's traditions, celebrating the multiplicity of approaches to music from around the world and performing on instruments unique to their nations, including the kamanche, a Persian bowed string instrument; the duduk, an Armenian woodwind instrument; and the shakuhachi, a Japanese end-blown flute.

The ensemble is one of the programs in Ma's Silk Road Project, an artistic and educational nonprofit that engages in cross-cultural exchanges and residencies, leads workshops for students and partners with prominent cultural institutions to create educational programs and materials. Following this tradition, the ensemble, Ma and IU Auditorium are working with the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music to provide residency activities and educational opportunities for IU Bloomington music students.

As a group, the Silk Road Ensemble has recorded five albums and performed throughout Asia, Europe and North America. "Off the Map," the group's most recent recording, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best classical crossover album in 2011.

"It is an honor to host Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "This is an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of our ever-expanding multicultural society through the language we all share: music. This concert, enhanced by the educational opportunities the ensemble is providing for our students, will be an unforgettable and invaluable experience for both the university and greater Bloomington community."
