BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On Saturday, April 6, the student organization IU Colleges Against Cancer will host the 10th annual Relay for Life, a 24-hour fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society.

From noon Saturday through noon Sunday, a variety of teams, from student organizations to Greek houses, will walk around the Gladstein Fieldhouse track.

Thirty-six teams and more than 250 participants already have raised nearly $20,500 for cancer research and patient care. The IU Colleges Against Cancer hopes to reach its goal of raising $35,000 on Saturday.

Throughout the event will be performances by Ladies First, The Hoosierettes, An Argot, the Parkour club, the Tae Kwando club and a contemporary dance class. There will also be a cardio hip-hop class and a Zumba class, as well as music from two live DJs.

The event will begin with a lap dedicated to cancer survivors, along with speeches from several survivors sharing their personal stories.

Bruce Hetrick, visiting professor for the IU School of Journalism, understands the importance of Relay for Life.

"As a cancer survivor, the father of a cancer survivor and the widower of a cancer victim, I know firsthand that cancer affects us all," Hetrick said. "The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a chance for each of us to honor people affected by cancer, and to advance research, treatment and patient care for those who need help down the road. Everyone's Relay gift -- no matter how small -- can help save and improve lives."

Team registration is open until the day of the event. Visit the IU Relay for Life website for more information.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. It prevents cancer and saves lives through research, education, advocacy and service. IU Colleges Against Cancer brings together students dedicated to bringing cancer awareness to campus and raising money for cancer research.
