BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Catherine Krege has been selected as Indiana University's fourth presidential intern. Her internship, which began this spring, focuses on providing a student-driven perspective on recruitment and engagement in IU's new School of Global and International Studies.

Selected for the position by IU President Michael A. McRobbie, Krege is a sophomore majoring in international studies and Spanish and minoring in political science. Her area of concentration in international studies is nations, states and boundaries in Latin America.

"I am deeply committed to the success of the exciting new School of Global and International Studies, and I am delighted that Catherine has agreed to serve the university in this important capacity," McRobbie said. "As a student who is extremely engaged in the International Studies Department and related activities, Catherine brings to the position exceptional academic credentials and an infectious enthusiasm about the enormous possibilities the new school will present for IU students."

Presidential interns are high-achieving IU undergraduates who are selected to work in the Office of the President. They contribute to the long-term improvement of the university while gaining valuable leadership skills and experience.

Krege, from Carmel, Ind., is a student in IU Bloomington's Hutton Honors College and a participant in the Political and Civic Engagement program in the College of Arts and Sciences. She studied last summer in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and will have internships this year in Melbourne, Australia, and Washington, D.C.

"I am honored and excited to work on this project for the Office of the President," she said. "I feel lucky to be at Indiana University during the creation of the School of Global and International Studies and even luckier to be a part of that transition. The new school brings opportunities for collaboration, expansion and improvement of highly valuable resources across the university. I look forward to exploring the student perspective and interests of the school's departments and programs."

Krege has served since November 2011 as lead student associate for the Community Deliberation Project of IU's Political and Civic Engagement, or PACE, program. She was a moderator and planner for PACE issues forums in 2012 and 2013, serves on student advisory boards for PACE and the College of Arts and Sciences, and has been a mentor and host to prospective Hutton Honors College students.

She is building liaison for student government at IU Bloomington's Union Street Center residence hall and was vice president of programming, social and educational, for student government in Teter residence hall in 2011-12. She is an IU Founders Scholar and Herbert Presidential Scholar and has received the IU Excellence, Hutton Honors College and College of Arts and Sciences scholarships. Last week she received the Hutton PACE Program Scholar Award.

Previous Indiana University presidential interns were Christian Hines in 2011-12, Esther Uduehi in 2010-11 and Miles Taylor in 2009-10.
