IU President Adam Herbert announces inaugural LeaD class

New leadership program designed to identify future university leaders

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam Herbert today (Feb. 3) announced a roster of 30 IU faculty who will participate in the 2006 IU Leadership Development Project.

A new program proposed by Herbert and presented to the IU Trustees for approval last September, IU LeaD is designed to emphasize the importance of leadership development throughout the university. It will provide a formal system for identifying potential leaders and build leadership "bench strength" at IU. The program will make a special effort to identify potential leaders in under-represented groups.

"We have an obligation to identify and develop IU's next generation of both academic and administrative leaders," Herbert said. "Through this program we will provide an opportunity for outstanding colleagues to develop the expanded knowledge base and skill sets needed as they assume expanded leadership responsibilities throughout the university.

"Each of the candidates who comprise the inaugural class of IULeaD participants has great potential for even higher levels of professional success," he said.

IU LeaD participants have been chosen from a pool of faculty nominated by administrators on all eight IU campuses. This first class represents IU Bloomington, IUPUI, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest and IU South Bend.

Participants will attend a series of management and leadership seminars, as well as other activities, that will strengthen the management and leadership of IU. The seminar series has been designed by Charles F. Bonser, emeritus dean of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and coordinator of the IU LeaD Program; Phillip M. Podsakoff, the John F. Mee Chair of Management and professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources in the IU Kelley School of Business; and Daniel Rives, IU associate vice president, University Human Resource Services. An oversight group of former senior executives at IU have served as an advisory body for the project.

"We are excited about getting President Herbert's initiative under way, as we launch the first of the seminar series in February. We think this effort will have considerable positive impact on the future of Indiana University," Bonser said.

Leadership development topics covered in the seminar series include: Strategic Management and Balanced Scorecard Competency Model; Financial Policy and Management; Dispute Resolution; Marketing, Branding, Communication in Higher Education; Resource and Fund Development; Power, Persuasion, Influence in Negotiation; and Executive Leadership.
