BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Board of Trustees today (May 5) confirmed the appointment of Roger J. Thompson to the position of vice provost for enrollment management.

Thompson comes to IU from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, where he has been associate vice president for enrollment management for the past three years.

In his new position, Thompson will oversee the offices of admissions, student financial assistance, the registrar and Bloomington campus orientation programs. He will report to Interim Provost Michael A. McRobbie.

"I am confident that Roger will provide IU with strong leadership in these key areas of responsibility," McRobbie said. "Roger has an extraordinary record of accomplishment in his previous positions. He comes to us well prepared for achieving our enrollment goals as they relate to the quality of incoming classes, diversity and revenue generation."

At Alabama, Thompson put in place new recruitment strategies that increased the size of the freshman class from 2,654 to 3,756 over three years, while at the same time increasing the diversity and the average grade point average and ACT score of entering freshmen.

Thompson holds a Ph.D. degree in education policy and administration from the University of Southern California, a master of science degree in college student personnel administration from Central Missouri State University, and a bachelor's degree in radio/television/film from California State University, Long Beach.

He served as university registrar at Alabama from 1998 to 2003. Before that, he was an associate and assistant registrar at the University of Southern California.

Thompson follows in the footsteps of Don Hossler, who retired as vice chancellor for enrollment services last July 1. Hossler, professor of educational leadership and policy studies, returned to his research interests in student college choice, persistence, enrollment managment and higher education finance, and also to teaching graduate classes in higher education and student affairs.

IU Registrar Roland Cote has served as interim vice chancellor while the search for Hossler's replacement was conducted.
