BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- ArtsWeek, Bloomington's campus-community arts festival, will take place from Feb. 21 to March 3, 2007 at various venues throughout the city and Indiana University Bloomington. Sponsored in part by the IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the city of Bloomington, ArtsWeek has traditionally included more than 50 separate events and exhibitions, integrating works by prominent local and visiting artists and performers.

Sherry Knighton-Schwandt, coordinator of ArtsWeek, announced that the theme for ArtsWeek in 2007 will be "Technology and the Arts."

Proposals for ArtsWeek mini-grants can be submitted between now and June 12 to the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. Guidelines for proposals are available by e-mailing sks@indiana.edu or visiting https://www.artsweek.indiana.edu. Grants are available to organizations on the IU Bloomington campus or in the Bloomington area. Individual artists are not eligible.

"ArtsWeek has grown dramatically in the last few years," said Sarita Soni, IU's vice provost for research. "We're looking forward to the biggest and best ArtsWeek yet in 2007."

The technology theme echoes the theme used for IU's New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities grant program last winter. "The technological advances in the arts are dramatic, ranging from virtual scenography in theater to digital visual art and interactive storytelling," Soni said. But the theme is broader than that, she added. "Technology doesn't necessarily have to mean brand-new, cutting-edge. It can be as profound as the invention of the wheel, or as culture-changing as the introduction of mass production."

"Themes have been useful in stimulating creativity and forging unexpected links between campus and community artists and programs," Knighton-Schwandt said. "Proposals don't necessarily have to adhere to the theme, but special consideration will be given to those with a link to technology."

Soni added, "Mostly, we want ArtsWeek to be a festival that involves as many people as possible, as participants and audiences, in all aspects of the arts."
