INDIANAPOLIS -- A new life sciences Web site developed by Indiana University provides a detailed look at the impact of life sciences research on the lives of Hoosiers and explains the importance of the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative to the future of Indiana's economy.

The interactive, multimedia Web site, at https://lifesciences.iu.edu, gives visitors the full story about the initiative, a proposal by IU to the Indiana General Assembly seeking support for increased funding statewide for scientific research at the state's research universities.

The Indiana Life Sciences initiative, if funded by the legislature, would enable Indiana's universities to recruit hundreds of top scientists to the state. Their research would provide the ideas that result in new products, jobs, businesses and health care necessary for Indiana to build on its existing life sciences economic strengths and compete with other states that are making similar investments.

The Web site provides an array of articles on life sciences research at IU and how it is creating new businesses and jobs, and improving the health of Indiana's citizens. Those who would like to better understand just what the life sciences are can check out the "Life Sciences 101" article.

"Life sciences is a top priority for Indiana University. We hope people will visit the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative Web site to learn in detail about our goals, our commitments, our accomplishments and our partnerships throughout Indiana as we promote this vitally important enterprise," said D. Craig Brater, M.D., vice president of IU with responsibility for life sciences, and dean of the IU School of Medicine.

Topics covered on the Web site include the health and economic benefits of the life sciences across the state, IU's collaborative work with Indiana's other universities, and IU's commitment to build on its education and research resources, and expertise for the benefit of all Hoosiers.

The Life Sciences Initiative Web site also serves as a "one-stop-shopping" site for news about life sciences at Indiana University. Relevant announcements from anywhere in the IU system will be noted in the site's "News" section.

The news announcements will be available for instant updating to those who subscribe to the site's news feed, using standard Internet RSS technology. Such news feeds can be monitored via current Internet browsers or by using such services as Bloglines (www.bloglines.com).

The Life Sciences Initiative Web site also offers visitors several ways to get involved, from telling their stories of how life sciences has affected their lives to sending letters of support to their legislators.
