Bakari Kitwana to lecture on hip-hop

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Union Board is proud to present its Black History Month lecturer -- Bakari Kitwana.

Co-founder of the first-ever National Hip-Hop Political Convention, Kitwana will give a lecture, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m., in the Indiana University Auditorium. The event is free.

Bakari will speak on the topic, "Can Hip-Hop Make the Transition from Cultural Movement to Political Power?" a subject that is sure to spark a lot of intellectual conversation on the true meaning of hip-hop.

Kitwana is the author of several books including The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture, and former executive editor of The Source magazine. He has been acknowledged as an expert on hip-hop politics by the Los Angeles Times, CNN, The O'Reilly Factor and other leading news outlets.

Kitwana also writes a column on hip-hop and youth culture called "Do the Knowledge" for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and is a consultant on hip-hop for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also has been an adjunct professor in the political science department at Kent State University, where he taught a course entitled, "The Politics of the Hip-Hop Generation."
