IT banking industry vet lauded for contributions to IU School of Informatics

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Mark Hill, co-founder and president emeritus of Baker Hill, is the recipient of the Hermes Award from the Indiana University School of Informatics.

Hill has been an active supporter and consultant to the school since its inception in 2001 and was presented with the award at a recent ceremony. The Hermes Award is based on service that advances the overall mission of the School of Informatics.

The many contributions of Hill and his wife, Karen, have benefited both the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis campus and the IU Bloomington campus and include the installation of a computer lab in the Informatics Building in Bloomington.

"Mark has been a tremendous advocate and leader, and the school largely would not be where it is now without his counsel and help," said Informatics Dean J. Michael Dunn. "Professionally, he has a tremendous understanding of business informatics, and we are pleased he has shared his time and talent with our school."

Hill is a founding member of the Dean's Advisory Council and has served as its chair. The DAC is a group of business, community and industry leaders who advise the school on curriculum and program development, public and private sector funding, research support, long-range planning, student guidance, external relations and institutional advancement. He also holds the academic appointment of adjunct professor of informatics and has several times taught a course he devised on technology and entrepreneurship.

"It has been exciting to be part of a brand new school at IU and watch it grow from a gleam in the eye of Myles Brand (former IU president) and Michael McRobbie (IU president-elect), to a world-class school with over 1,500 students," said Hill. "Dean Dunn has shown remarkable leadership."

The Westfield, Ind., businessman co-founded Baker Hill in 1983 with his wife, Karen Baker Hill. The company, now a subsidiary of Experian, focuses on the banking industry and integrating business processes with technology solutions for their clients.

The Hills head up Collina Ventures LLC, a private investment firm focusing on technology companies in Central Indiana. They company was founded on the principle that technology companies are inherently people businesses.

Mark Hill serves on the board of directors of numerous companies, including Interactive Intelligence, Bluelock and Angel Learning. He was the 2002 Inaugural Chair of the TechPoint Foundation, bridging the "digital divide" by providing technology for at-risk youth.

He has received numerous professional and civic accolades in his career including the Heartland's 2002 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for technology and the Indiana University Foundation Spirit of Philanthropy award.

Hill has served the state of Indiana in various capacities at the request of the past three governors. He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the IU Kelley School of Business.
