IU School of Journalism hosting conference with Turkish communication scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This week, the Indiana University School of Journalism is hosting the fifth international symposium, "Communication in the Millennium," which will include around 40 mass communications scholars from Turkey.

The first symposium took place at the University of Texas in 2003 and it has rotated between a U.S. and Turkish university each year since then. Its goal is to maintain a forum for international multidisciplinary dialogue about mass communications between Turkish and American scholars. Last year, the event was held at Anadolu University in Eskisehir, Turkey.

In addition to the visiting scholars from Turkey, other conference presenters will come from as far away as Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as other American universities and IU. Journalism students from IU also are being invited to attend.

The conference, which will run today (May 16) through Friday (May 18) at the Indiana Memorial Union, will feature nine sessions, with topics that include news media agenda-setting, advertising and public relations, cyber-politics and the television industry in Turkey. Several documentary films from that country will be screened in Ernie Pyle Hall 220 on Thursday (May 17) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"This conference offers a rare exchange between Turkish and American communications scholars, and we were pleased to be selected as the first site in the Midwest for the conference," said Brad Hamm, dean of the IU School of Journalism. "It's also a fascinating time in Turkey's history, as recent news events show this week, and we look forward as a campus to learning more about the issues from our guests during their stay in Indiana."
