Kelley Scholars announced at Indiana University

Ten top students to study business

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ten Kelley Scholars have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington.

Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive full tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses, and funding for academic activities such as overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $15,000 for recipients who are Indiana residents and about $30,000 for those who are non-residents.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

The Kelley Scholars were selected from a group of more than 200 students who had been accepted to IU and who were invited to apply for the Kelley program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

The 10 Kelley Scholars, their hometowns, and their high schools are:

• Kristy Anderson, the daughter of Gary and Lois Anderson of Munster, Ind. -- A graduate of Munster High School, she was president of the senior class and the National Honor Society chapter, and a member of an academic team, which placed second statewide.
• Julie Bowman, the daughter of Stephen and Barbara Bowman of Newburgh, Ind. -- A graduate of Castle High School, she received the Saint Maria Goretti Youth Distinction from the Catholic Diocese of Evansville and was a four-year member of the academic team and Key Club. She also was president of her school's Teen Power and Spanish clubs.
• Melissa Frye, the daughter of Jerry Frye of Porter, Ind. and Laura Embree of Chesterton, Ind. -- A graduate of Chesterton High School, she was involved in the speech and debate teams, Quizbowl and the National Honor Society.
• Aaron Grutter, the son of Peter and Barb Grutter of Plymouth, Mich. -- A graduate of Plymouth Homeschool, he received a Silver Certificate from the Congressional Award Program in recognition of more than 60 hours of community service he performed. He also was president and treasurer of the local 4-H Club.
• Elizabeth Head, the daughter of Julie and Bill Head of Bloomington, Ind. -- A graduate of Bloomington High School South, she also is an IU Hoosier Presidential Scholar. She was a four-year member of the honor roll, a member of the National Honor Society and a delegate to Hoosier Girls State.
• Sean Kelley, the son of Michael and Peggy Kelley of Brownsburg, Ind. -- A graduate of Cathedral High School, he also is an IU Hoosier Presidential Scholar and was a finalist for the Hendricks County Lilly Endowment Scholarship. He co-captained the track and cross country teams, and was sports editor of his high school newspaper.
• Nathaniel Kenninger, the son of Dave and Judy Kenninger of Brownsburg, Ind. -- A graduate of Brownsburg High School, he was a member of its Brain Game team and was involved in madrigals and show choir.
• Nicolas Perfetti, the son of Dominic and Sheree Perfetti of Lowell, Ind. -- A graduate of Lowell High School, he was a member of its Academic Decathalon, Academic Superbowl and swimming teams, the National Honor Society and also was class president.
• Benjamin Scott, the son of Shawn McKee Scott of Zionsville, Ind. -- A graduate of Zionsville Community High School, he was a National Merit Commended Scholar, a state finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman, a member of the National Honor Society and a three-sport varsity letterman.
• Megan Walsh, the daugher of Terry and Debra Walsh of Zionsville, Ind. -- A graduate of Zionsville Community High School, she was a National Merit Commended Finalist and AP Scholar.
