BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will be a source of highlights in an already superlative stretch of celebratory and history-making events during Indiana University's "Celebrate IU" week, Oct. 13-21. Several of its faculty -- famed conductors and composers, internationally known virtuoso performers and critically acclaimed singers, all of whom are major artists on the world's stage -- offer events that are free and open to the public.

During the week that features the inauguration of Michael McRobbie as IU's 18th president and the dedication of the multidisciplinary science building Simon Hall, the Jacobs School will present a wide variety of more than 30 events that include performances during the inauguration ceremony, as well as two free evening inauguration concerts.

Two-time Grammy Award-winner Sylvia McNair, soprano and senior lecturer in the Jacobs School, will solo during the inauguration on Oct. 18 with the IU Philharmonic Orchestra, singing selections she picked from Joseph Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. The ceremony also will include the Inaugural Fanfare composed by Professor of Music David Dzubay for this occasion and performed by six IU Herald Trumpeters. The Philharmonic, conducted by Professor of Music David Effron, will play selections from Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome. organist Christopher Young, professor of music, is featured in the processional and recessional of this event, which begins at 3 p.m. at the IU Auditorium.

Later that evening internationally acclaimed pianist and Jacobs School faculty member André Watts will perform Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor at the Presidential Inauguration Concert by the IU Philharmonic. Conducted by David Effron, the IU Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform works by Dimitri Shostakovich and Ludwig Van Beethoven. This celebratory concert in the IU Auditorium begins at 8 p.m.

Distinguished Professor of Music David N. Baker, a world-renowned composer who recently received the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts' Living Jazz Legend Award for lifetime achievement, will lead the IU Jazz Band in a second inaugural concert. Scheduled for Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the IU Auditorium, Baker's band will be joined by soloist Marietta Simpson, a mezzo-soprano and associate professor of music in the Jacobs School.

A complete listing of the more than 30 Jacobs School events scheduled during the week is noted below. All events are free, unless ticket prices are indicated.
