Indiana University to host economic development conference

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana University President Myles Brand, Indiana Lt. Gov. Joseph Kernan and David Goodrich, the president of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, will headline a panel discussion on their organizations' roles in state economic development during a day-long conference hosted by IU.

"Indiana University: Essential to Indiana's New Economy" will be offered to business and community leaders on Tuesday (Dec. 10) at the University Place Conference Center at IUPUI. The conference will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude shortly after 4 p.m.

Faculty and staff from IU will conduct sessions throughout the day to provide the latest information about the university's role in the state's economy, in life sciences and in information technology.

The schedule is:

9:30-9:45 a.m. Introduction by IU President Myles Brand

9:45-10:25 a.m. Genomics and All That It Means, Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, executive associate dean for research affairs at the IU School of Medicine

10:25-11:15 a.m. The Future of the School of Medicine and Life Sciences, Craig Brater, dean and Walter J. Daly Professor at the IU School of Medicine

11:15-11:45 a.m. A Unique Partnership: The Indiana Proteomics Consortium, John G.R. Hurrell, president, Indiana Proteomics Consortium

11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. IT and Its Impact, Michael McRobbie, IU vice president for information technology and chief information officer

12:30-1:45 p.m. Lunch and keynote address, Bill Hunt, chairman, Hunt Capital Partners, LLC

2-3 p.m. The Respective Roles in Economic Development: Brand, Kernan and Goodrich. The discussion will be moderated by Gerry Dick, host of Inside Indiana.

3:15-4:15 p.m. Informatics Success Story, Darrell Bailey, executive associate dean, IU School of Informatics

3:45-4:15 p.m. The Role and Status of IU's Incubator, Mark Long, president and chief executive officer, IU's Advanced Research and Technology Institute

4:15 p.m. Next Steps, Gerald Bepko, IUPUI chancellor and IU vice president for long-range planning
