IU Vice President Marshall to deliver keynote address at global optometry conference

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Dr. Edwin C. Marshall, Indiana University vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural affairs and professor of optometry and public health, will deliver one of the invited keynote addresses at the Second World Conference on Optometric Globalization.

The conference will be hosted by the World Council of Optometry (WCO) and the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO) in conjunction with the UK College of Optometrists, April 11-13 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London. Marshall's presentation will address "The Public Health Impact of Education and Accreditation in an Era of Globalization."

Later this month, Marshall also will travel to Manila, Philippines, to give the keynote address at the Diamond Anniversary National Convention of the Optometric Association of the Philippines. Marshall will speak on the topic, "Optometry as a Public Health Profession in a Globalized Society."

WCO is an international optometric organization representing 200,000 optometrists from 75 member organizations in 40 countries. It is the worldwide organization for the professionals working in the field of optometry, their associations and institutions. Its mission is to facilitate the enhancement and development of eye and vision care worldwide via education, humanitarian outreach and policy development.

Over three days, the Second World Conference on Optometric Globalization will address the political, humanitarian and economic considerations related to the development of effective, efficient policies and delivery care systems that improve visual health.

"WCOG2 has been designed to appeal to leaders from professional organizations, governmental agencies, ophthalmic industry, regulatory boards, educational institutions, accreditation agencies, public health organizations and non-governmental organizations throughout the world," according to conference organizers.

The conference will feature five sessions on the key issues that directly affect multidisciplinary eye care teams, policymakers, non-governmental organizations, public health experts and administrators:
