BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will honor President Emeritus Adam W. Herbert with the unveiling of his official portrait, on May 1 (Thursday), at 4:30 p.m., in the East Lobby on the Mezzanine Level of the Indiana Memorial Union Building. The general public is invited to attend, and a reception is scheduled for immediately after the ceremony.

Herbert selected Florida-based artist C.J. Fox to paint his portrait. Fox, whose work can be viewed at https://www.cjfoxportraits.com/, also created the likenesses of former IU presidents Myles Brand, Thomas Ehrlich and Elvis Stahr, whose portraits all hang in an unofficial presidential portrait gallery located in the East Lobby area of the IMU. Herbert's portrait will hang permanently there, as well, after the unveiling.

The artwork, authorized by the Trustees of Indiana University, is a gift to the university from the Indiana University Foundation.

"IU has a great tradition of honoring its past presidents with a portrait, which both reminds us of their contributions as IU's leaders and makes them come to life for future generations," said Curtis R. Simic, president of the IU Foundation. "The artist has captured the warmth that President Herbert shared so generously with the IU community, friends and donors."

Herbert was the 17th president of IU. He was inaugurated in 2003, and he retired in 2007.
