Indiana University officials proposed a 3.45 percent ($196) increase to the room and board rate in IU Bloomington's residence halls during the meeting Thursday (Feb. 27) of the Board of Trustees Finance and Audit Committee. If approved by the Trustees, IUB's 2003-04 room and board rate of $5,772 would put the university eighth among Big Ten institutions.

According to the proposal, room rates would increase 6 percent with no proposed increase in the cost of meal plans, resulting in an overall increase of 3.45 percent. This will be the third straight year that food costs have not increased. The housing rate increase is attributable primarily to repair and maintenance of buildings and construction of an academic support center.

The room and board rate is based on a two-meals-per-day plan, which freshmen are assessed. Upperclassmen can elect to purchase a different meal plan, which could lower their costs.

The $196 increase is equal to the lowest dollar increase in projected room and board rates among Big Ten institutions for the 2003-04 academic year.

Trustees will vote on the proposal at their April meeting.

The Finance and Audit Committee approved a proposal that would increase existing rental rates for IUPUI housing by 4 percent. The committee also sent to the board proposed rental rates for new housing that will become available on the campus later this year and in 2004. Those lease rates range from $495 per month per person for a four-bedroom, two-bath apartment to $695 per month per person for a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment.

The full board will consider the IUPUI rates when it meets during regular session on Friday (Feb. 28).
