Classical music radio and TV host Fred Child to broadcast live from IU Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- WFIU, WTIU, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music are bringing classical music radio and TV host Fred Child to Bloomington, June 17-19, to help kick off IU's Summer Music Festival.

Child is the host of American Public Media's Performance Today, the most-listened-to classical music radio show in America, with more than 1.2 million weekly listeners on 237 stations around the country. Child is also the commentator and announcer for Live from Lincoln Center, the only live performing arts series on television.

While in Bloomington, Child will record two episodes of Performance Today from the studios of WFIU. His participation in the IU Summer Music Festival will include a special live broadcast event on WFIU of the "Pressler and Friends" concert from Auer Concert Hall, June 18 at 8 p.m. Child will also be featured on WTIU's The Weekly Special, which airs on Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m. with a rebroadcast on Friday, June 20 at 10 p.m.

Child will give a pre-concert talk before the Tuesday evening performance by the Biava Quartet and pianist Jeannette Koekkoek.

Child will host the IU Summer Music Festival performance by the Biava Quartet and pianist Jeanette Koekkoek, performing chamber music by Haydn, Janacek and Franck.

A live broadcast event by WFIU and the IU Jacobs School of Music. Child will host the "Menahem and Friends" concert featuring Mozart's Piano Quartet, K493, in E-Flat Major and Brahms' Piano Quartet No 1, Op. 25, in G Minor. The concert can be heard on WFIU 103.7, beginning just before 8 p.m.

Featuring more than 40 free and ticketed events performed by guests, faculty and students from the IU Jacobs School of Music, the 2008 IU Summer Music Festival (June 15-Aug. 9) is the most active summer collegiate music program in North America, with orchestral concerts, opera, chamber music, jazz evenings, recitals and outdoor band concerts. Included is a performance by the Beaux Arts Trio on their farewell tour; vocal ensembles Sweet Honey in the Rock and Chanticleer; Canadian Brass; Maureen McGovern; the Festival Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Renes, Xian Zhang and Robert Spano; the return of the acclaimed Festival Jazz Orchestra; Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio; Penderecki Quartet; Weiss-Kaplan-Newman Trio, and the Biava Quartet. IU Opera Theater's production of Jerry Bock's romantic comedy She Loves Me will be presented in the Musical Arts Center, and ¡Unicamente la Verdad! will be produced at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The popular sunset band concerts on the MAC lawn will be offered on three consecutive July Wednesday evenings.
