BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Media critic and election-reform advocate Mark Crispin Miller will speak Thursday, Oct. 2, at Indiana University Bloomington. His lecture, "Rigged: Election Fraud and Media Coverage, 2000-2008," will take place at 7 p.m. in Woodburn Hall 100.

Miller, professor of media ecology in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University, is internationally known for his scholarship on mass culture, advertising, propaganda, media concentration and the politics and practices of elections.

"Mark Crispin Miller has worked tirelessly since 2000, in several books as well as many media interviews, to expose what he calls 'a lethal combination of old-fashioned vote suppression and high-tech election fraud' that has derailed fair voting practices in this country since 2000 and in subsequent elections," said Linda Charnes, IU Bloomington professor of English. "Arguing that the media have failed to keep this story in the public's eye, he will speak to the IU and Bloomington community about the hard evidence of election fraud, the media's role in the process, and why, with a presidential election days away, we cannot let it happen again in 2008."

Miller is expected to talk about what he sees as a broad unwillingness throughout the political establishment, the media included, to face the facts about election fraud and the real and present danger that it poses to U.S. democracy.

One of the nation's best-known advocates of democratic media reform, Miller has been interviewed on National Public Radio, PBS, "Democracy Now!," "The O'Reilly Factor" and other media venues. His books include Boxed In: The Culture of TV; The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder; Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order; Fooled Again: The Real Case for Electoral Reform and his latest, Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy, 2000-2008.

He is also a performer whose off-Broadway show, A Patriot Act, ran in the summer of 2004. He is completing a new book, The Marlboro Man: An American Success Story, to be published by Yale University Press in 2009.

His IU lecture is sponsored by the Departments of English and Political Science, the American Studies and Cultural Studies Programs, the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, the School of Journalism, the School of Law, the Center on American Politics, the Center for History and Memory, and the Horizons of Knowledge Lecture series.
