Fourth class of Cox Scholars selected at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Twenty-one undergraduates at Indiana University's Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Cox Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.

"The Cox Scholarship continues to provide diligent students with a means of financing their Indiana University educations and realizing their dreams," said Gene Tempel, president of the Indiana University Foundation. "I cannot think of a better way to honor the legacy of Jesse and Beulah Cox."

The Jesse H. and Beulah Chanley Cox Scholarship Fund is IU's most charitable merit-based scholarship for working students who are in-state residents. The renewable scholarship provides 75 percent of the estimated cost of attendance at IU Bloomington and IUPUI.

To be eligible, applicants must display high academic achievement and work to pay for 25 percent of their college expenses. In addition to the 21 Cox scholars, the fund makes as many as 42 other scholarships available to IU students.

Speaking after Jesse Cox's death, IU President Michael A. McRobbie said, "Jesse was an inspiration to all who believe that happiness can be found in the quest for knowledge and that a strong work ethic deserves to be rewarded."

Now in its fourth year, the Cox Scholarship program was started with a generous $15 million donation from recently deceased IU alumnus Jesse Cox and his late wife, Beulah. The Coxes initiated the scholarship fund to reward students with the dedication to balance both work and school in the pursuit of an IU degree. Jesse Cox financed his own IU education during the Great Depression through his persistence in entrepreneurial ventures, such as a transit service between Bloomington and Indianapolis and a mimeograph service.

Following his graduation in 1944, Jesse and Beulah started J.H. Cox Manufacturing, a company that supplied venetian blinds to major retailers. They founded and later sold Aero Blind and Drapery Inc., which is now the leading window treatment company in the upper Midwest. After selling the company in 1982, the Coxes created companies such as Jesse H. Cox Inc. and B.J. Realty Inc. to manage both agricultural and commercial real estate rental property in Monroe, Boone, Hamilton and Putnam counties.
