BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University ranks 12th in the nation among public universities in the market value of its endowment, according to a survey released by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

As of June 30, 2008, IU's endowment totaled $1.55 billion, which placed IU seventh among the Big Ten universities, up from eighth last year. More than 790 colleges and universities participated in the survey.

Although the value of the endowment declined by 0.7 percent from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2008, IU improved its national ranking among public universities by two places in 2008, jumping from 14th to 12th.

"Because of the generosity of our donors and alumni, Indiana University continues to rank among the U.S.'s top public institutions of learning," said IU President Michael A. McRobbie. "This ranking reflects strength in a difficult economic environment. The endowment allows us to plan and to do, providing funding that is especially important to students and to IU's quest to make higher education affordable."

The endowment, which is managed by the Indiana University Foundation, received contributions from more than 110,000 donors last year.
