Sharon Robinson

Professor of Music (Cello)

Professor
Jacobs School of Music

Background:

Professor of Cello Sharon Robinson brings a wealth of artistry, knowledge, and experience to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Combining her lifetime experiences as an internationally renowned soloist and recitalist, her 35 years as founding cellist of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, and the additional breadth of having been a member of both the Ciompi String Quartet at Duke University and the Houston Symphony Orchestra, brings extraordinary depth to her teaching. She has forged bonds with many of today's leading and upcoming composers, commissioning works for solo cello, cello and orchestra, duos and double concertos with her husband, violinist Jaime Laredo, and many piano trios and chamber works. Robinson is honored to have been named Fellow of the Academy by the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences, and, in 2008, received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Marlboro College.

Her guest appearances with orchestras in the United States have included the National Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Boston, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and San Francisco Symphonies. In Europe, she has performed with the London Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra, and the English, Scottish, and Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestras.

She has won the Avery Fisher Recital Award, the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Award, the Pro Musicis Sponsorship Award, and the Leventritt Foundation Award.

Professor Robinson's television appearances have included The Tonight Show, The Today Show, the Kennedy Center Honors on CBS, and a profile on CBS Sunday Morning. Her festival engagements include Spoleto, Mostly Mozart, Aspen, London's South Bank, Seoul Spring, Madeira, Granada, Edinburgh, and Prague's Autumn Festival, where she performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto at the famed Dvorak Hall. She has been welcomed back to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia for acclaimed concert tours.

Robinson has collaborated with Rudolf Serkin and Alexander Schneider at the Marlboro Music Festival, Leon Fleisher, Janos Starker, Rudolf Firkusny, Yo-Yo Ma, Eugene Istomin, Itzhak Perlman, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Mstislav Rostroprovich, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the Emerson, Guarneri, Miami, Julliard, Orion, and Tokyo Quartets. In December 2001, Musical America named the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio the 2002 Ensemble of the Year.

She has recorded numerous chamber and concerto works on labels that include Koch, Chandos, and Sony. Her close relationship with today's composers have led to many commissions for solo and chamber works from Leon Kirchner, Arvo Part, Ned Rorem, Stanley Silverman, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Joan Tower, David Ott, Katherine Hoover, Richard Danielpour, and Andre Previn.
