Baker was the winner of the National Association of Jazz Educators' Hall of Fame Award in 1981. He has composed more than 2,000 works and has authored books on jazz performance. Baker also served as adjunct professor of Afro-American Studies and was co-director of the Smithsonian Institution's Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as a member of the National Council on the Arts.
