Served as director of IU's Russian & East European Institute, 1991-95. Johnson is one of the most knowledgeable people in the United States on Russian and East European mass media. He is author of "Slovakia 1918-1938: Education and the Making of a Nation," and many articles on Czech and Slovak history and a frequent traveler to East Central Europe, especially to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.
