Background:

  • Nominated by President George Bush to the National Council on Humanities, the advisory board to the National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • Influential in the interpretation of Renaissance art.
  • Member of the Academia Sienese Degli Intronati, the oldest learned academy in Europe.
  • His book on Sienese painting won the President's Award of the American Association for Italian Studies.
  • Co-author of "Art in the Western World" with Adelheid Gealt, director of the IU Art Museum.
