Background:

Gary M. Potter is a former faculty member of San Francisco State University and the University of California Santa Cruz, and served as a visiting professor at the Musikwissenschaftliches Institut of the University of Hamburg (1991-1992). His special interests include theory pedagogy, teaching musical skills, twentieth-century music, and jazz studies.

Professor Potter's articles have been published in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, College Music Symposium, and Jazzforschung. He has extensive experience as a performer on keyboards, trombone, and double bass with several published recordings and CDs.
