Background:

Sperling's research focuses on Sino-Tibetan relations and Tibetan History.

His publications include: "Tibet," in John Block Friedman and Kristen Mossler Figg, eds., Medieval Trade, Travel, and Explorations: An Encyclopedia (New York, 2000); "Exile and Dissent: The Historical and Cultural Context," in Tibet Since 1950, (New York, 2000); and "Awe and Submission: A Tibetan Aristocrat at the Court of Qianlong," International Review of History, 20 (1998). He teaches the courses, The Civilization of Tibet; Introduction to the History of Tibet; Tibet and the West; Sino-Tibetan Relations; Inner Asian Peoples and Nationality Policy in the People's Republic of China; U486 Intermediate Tibetan I; and Intermediate Tibetan II
